Make Work Study Sessions

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Many of us probably have a list of things to do whether that be assignments, projects, or even simple house cleaning however the question that comes is how I can complete all of these or whether will I complete these. When deciding how or when to complete the tasks you have can be very challenging because there are many components that come with it such as the due date, how much time you’ll have, how long it’ll take, etc.

Today I want to give some of my experiences and advice on how to get a grounded idea of making what I call “work-study sessions”. These sessions usually contain chapter readings, assignments/homework, projects, and studying for me, however, it can be anything you want not just academic-based. My top components when making a session are

  1. What are my assignments/ tasks are

  2. Time and place

  3. Materials needed

  4. Finalizing a schedule

Making a list and organizing tasks is typically the first thing I do because I look at the due dates, what exactly are the tasks asking me to do, and how long it’ll take me or how much time I have. When you figure out the bulk of the basics of your tasks, you’ll have an idea of where to start and how you’ll space yourself out.

Time and place are the second things I consider and by that, I think of when and where I’ll do my tasks. When it comes to timing it’s not like when making list this, the time component is your availability of when you’ll be able to work. For example, let’s say I have an open weekend instead of making plans with friends I’ll use that time instead to do my schoolwork. Or if during my weekdays I want to work on my tasks I’ll look when I’m “free” such as class breaks, the time before work, or even after work. Deciding these times can be hard to do especially if you are someone who is busy but at the same time though to make these sessions you need to give them time. The place is another thing I consider because you need to choose and be in an environment that will not distract you too much and help motivate you. Personally staying in my house restricts my ability to do schoolwork but being in cafés or libraries helps me more. So, deciding where to study doesn’t need to be anywhere super fancy or far away pick somewhere that feels right to you, somewhere where the vibes will help you maintain focus.

Getting materials is self-explanatory these typically include things you’ll need or even want to have with you when doing these tasks. I have my laptop, iPad, phone, maybe a calculator, headphones, and water. However, you can always add more like bringing a notebook and pens and pencils.

Now to finish making your study session it’s making a schedule or outline. These typically include a time frame you give yourself, when you’ll do the tasks, and how much you want to complete for the day. I like to give myself a time frame when working because it gives me a sense of pressure that I must either finish all my assignments or at least most of them. When deciding how much to do I personally say to not overwhelm yourself with too much and of course work on the more important tasks or the ones that have a closer due date.

So even though I have this outline for you guys to use remember that these sessions can be as long and as flexible to work with you because everyone is different and has their own lives. But I hope that with this I have given you an idea of where to start.
