Attention- notice is taken of someone or something; the regarding of someone or something as interesting or important as stated by Google. Now I know many of us struggle with maintaining attention and honestly, I think it’s something that will always be hard even for me. Although it is hard for me, I have come across a few things that help me to improve my attention span over time.
The first thing I did was a self-evaluation of myself. With this evaluation, I mainly included my learning techniques and my habits. Understanding your learning techniques is important to know because it shows how you study as a student, but it also can help determine your distractions and time. With habits, it’s more of knowing what your good and bad habits are exactly. For example, my good habits are that when I want to do something I usually go for it however my bad habit is I get easily sidetracked by things around me or when I get random thoughts about things. Recognizing these two main factors helped me understand myself as a student and my studying and working abilities.
The environment is a major factor that I feel affects people the most with attention. As we know the environment can affect both our mental and physical state and outside factors can either motivate us or decline us. Determining your good and bad environments is important because you don’t want to be working in an environment where you feel down you want an environment that’ll help you. My good environments are cafés, libraries, and school and my bad environments are mainly at home. Knowing and understanding my environment have helped my attention span because I can focus for a longer period instead of a short one.
As mentioned earlier understating yourself and your environment determining your major distractions brings these two evaluations together. These distractions can be simple to complex from simply being on your phone, browsing the web, etc, and for complex it can be people around you or even yourself. Knowing your major distractions, you can figure out ways to either face them or find alternative solutions. Being on my phone is one of my major distractions so what I do is I do a time-lapse of myself doing my work so that I can’t touch my phone and I can also see visually how distracted or focused I am.
Of course, when it comes to maintaining attention it’s not something that people can easily fix it takes time to improve your attention span and understanding. But I hope that with this small evaluation, you can find the issue and start finding ways to help improve yourself.
